The drawing has had another 3-5 hours on it. Still have lots to work on especially the body and some more values on the fur around the face of the dog.

The "Dove" called "Keeping Warm" is a 11x14 acrylic I finished in my acrylic class last night. I think I would still prefer oils as they take longer time to dry and feel like "butter" when mixing.

The strawberries called "Berry-Berry" is also an acrylic I started this past winter. (finally finished it) They both need varnishing and then wire for hanging.

These are a couple of pencil drawings I have been working on for my "Drawing Class" showing the students how I start out and bring the drawing to completion by using values and shading.
The drawing of the dog is a photo I took from a friend's FB page. I liked the position of the dog to create an interesting composition. You can see the "body" is sketched in which is how I start all of the drawings to get the form and proportions correct. When I feel they are right I start to layer in shading leaving the real darks until later. I like to build up to the real darks. The dog drawing isn't finished so I could show how I begin the work.

The horse is finished (I think!) The tail could use a bit more detailing but I like to study the drawing for awhile before I add anymore. You can see how dark you can be in a pencil drawing. I use various leads starting with HB up to 8HB. I also use a 2H for real small details. This really "pushes" the lead into the grain of the paper to create the heavy darks...ie. the tail.

So, I will be posting some more water colours soon and a few oils! I will keep you more up to date than I did in the past year.
It has been almost a year since I have wrote in the Blog...last year was an eventful one for me. The biggest thing and most disturbing emotionally was the loss of my dog Dan, he had spleen cancer and had just turned 14. My best friend and follower. Then I had a double knee replacement which has taken a few months out of my life for recovery I am fine now and am back at painting full time. I have several pieces here to show you some are finished some still need some "tweaking"I will provide a bit of information on each post.
Comments both critical and complimentary are much appreciated feel free!
This is the latest commission piece I just finished for the town of Newmarket, Ontario. It is a sample of my commercial Architectural rendering. I have completed 4 renderings of various locations in Newmarket and there is one more pending on approval. In the meantime I have been busy with teaching my art classes & trying to complete some large oils for the up coming spring opening of Gallery on The Lake in Buckhorn. (they close for the winter season) I will be posting these paintings as I complete them.Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-22759669103820498382013-02-20T07:57:00.000-08:002013-02-20T07:57:02.922-08:00Portrait Drawing We (my drawing class) have been working on individual portraits from a photograph preferably taken by us (the artist). The purpose of these drawings are to help the Artist to "see" proportions of the face to observe how light hits the face to create a 3-dimentional work. Photography tends to "flatten" objects so as we draw the face, we have to pay close attention to the light. I exaggerated the value of the skin to compensate for the flash of the camera. A better photo would have used natural light. (Back then I wasn't aware of how to take better photographs). A superb drawing would have been from a live model where lighting would have played a key role and an extreme challenge of observation. Most of my students are drawing to help in other areas of their art work and are painting for a hobby, so using photograph reference is what they generally will be using.Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-21755788070642516252012-11-06T03:54:00.002-08:002012-11-06T03:54:47.042-08:00Anyone interested in questions & answers from Artists? If anyone is interested in how "we" artists think... how our daily thought process works or if you just want to get answers to some pertinent questions?
This "little" painting 36"x48" is one I just started. I have 3 on the go now, hoping to get them done in the VERY near future as my Gallery hasn't received any new work yet this year!

My workshop is next Tuesday & Wed. in water colour (painting flowers) so I have to do a mental switch again. My teaching starts in Sept. & I have taken on 6 paintings for a rather large commission all in water colour.
I will try & post more regularly and keep the brushes warm!!!Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-76078932855828947572012-07-31T06:20:00.000-07:002012-07-31T06:20:59.697-07:00Well....you would think once you finished your stint of teaching one would have more time to paint!!! Not so. After a 10 day trip to Nova Scotia (not long enough as the place was beautiful!) I just finished a house commission, turned down a HUGE commission due to time restraints..they wanted 4 large commercial areas drawn & completed by Sept. 5th & I was to start today! (Not possible without working like a maniac, & I'm not up to it anymore. So I passed even though the money would have been very nice! Now, I can concentrate on what I LUV to do...PAINT! Hurray!
This is the oil painting I'm currently working on. The top painting is after yesterday's session and the lower version was 2 weeks ago.Yesterday, I worked primarily on the upper right side blocking in more background and establishing light filtering thru the trees on the ground. Detailing is still on hold ie. fallen leaves, debris etc. My main concern at this point is to get the "feel" of the place, the "woodsy" damp quiet! So colour and values are very important and getting the colour of moss green correct. So, still quite away to go, but coming along! This is 48"x60" someone needs a big wall space! The Gallery in Clarksburg has requested larger paintings.Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-75098699974738513062012-05-07T18:41:00.000-07:002012-05-07T18:41:26.311-07:00

The first pen & ink assignment for my spring class!

I finished the first assignment drawing that I gave my class, and just had prints done today to demonstrate the water colour application in Wednesdays' class. Then we tackle a winter scene. This robin was waiting for water in our birdbath several weeks ago and I took his photo. He has his other leg tucked up against his chest. This bothered some of my students so they opted to add another leg to the picture. Artistic licence is always welcome in my classes and I encourage them to use their own photos for reference if at all possible!

I was at the CSPWC annual general meeting this past Saturday, where we elected in "new members". It is always a pleasure to see new work and faces in our group. It gives us a chance to see our "old" friends and to catch up on their art projects.

On another note...when my classes are finished at the end of June, we will be going to the east coast where I hope to finally get some plein air work done!!! Can't wait...
Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-50196165392385894822012-04-12T08:05:00.002-07:002012-04-12T08:05:48.710-07:00My finished Commission!I just went through the past few posts and realized I didn't post the finished commission of the Heritage House in Newmarket,Ontario. The clients were very pleased and that of course makes me happy!
So, rather than finish up more water colours I decided to pull out the oils again. I was in the process of this marsh scene I painted last fall near Bala, Ontario and really like the colours. The early morning light is my main interest and I am trying to achieve the mood of this morning. I have a small 6"x8" painting I did on location as a reference as well as several photos.
I still need to add all of the lights in the shadow areas, adjust values and add several hints of sunlight coming through the trees. I will post my progress in the next couple of days.Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-13878914725101804452012-04-07T05:22:00.000-07:002012-04-07T05:22:31.470-07:00Another one completed!

This is another demo piece from my watercolour classes. No real excuse except life and teaching have played havoc on my schedule. I am really trying to juggle my time and making an effort to post at least once a week!

I am in the process of finishing many small water colours that I started as studies in my classes in the winter. The spring sessions start next week so I will have many more near June.

On another note, I will be having a couple of small shows (I hope) I have entered into the Newmarket Studio Tour in October jurying is going on now. I also am considering showing my work at the Newmarket "Art Market" the 3rd Saturday of every month during June,July, August & Sept. I may consider another Home show as well. I will post these announcements on my blog and on facebook.
This is a sample of 12 model homes that I have been working on for the month of December. They are going to be built in Bradford, Ontario. I get 3 at a time & have approximately one week to paint three & deliver them.( roughly explains where this month has gone!!) This large commission I started in November & hope to finish as soon as the commercial work has ended. Painting this is more interesting and rewarding than the new homes!
These are samples of what I have been doing & I am working on the last 2 paintings of commercial work which have to be finished by Tuesday Jan. 3rd After that my teaching starts up again on the 11th. With a bit of luck...I may get back to my oils soon! The Gallery's are getting a bit thin with work!
Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-12380309927599765812011-10-20T04:23:00.000-07:002011-10-20T04:23:40.853-07:00Teaching,Pen & Ink and Watercolour!Well, it has been awhile...again! I seem to get caught up in everyday "stuff" & then get bogged down with working on my teaching every week and then there is nothing left in me for my own painting. (gotta work on that !)
These are 4 pen & ink drawings some with colour (watercolour) applied either to the original or on a print.
I am also going to be giving a watercolour workshop in November to the East Gwillimbury Art Group for a day. The teaching seems to be going along very well.
I did it in 2 weeks instead of 1but not bad for me! I am now focused on the next piece. I am extremely busy for the next 2 weeks but hope to get some painting in. The teaching is starting up in late Sept. and classes have to be planned and some exercises done as examples.
I really have to make painting my priority. It is really difficult sometimes, and I feel I am starting to get into a bit of a rut. For some reason, I have been dwelling on the past. Mistakes, choices and what if's. Maybe it's my pending birthday, who knows. I do have a few things I wish I could have done differently and I'm sure I'm not alone on this. Painting however has always been my main passion but economics due play a major role in self doubt. I only can improve and with so does some monetary gain. I feel I have about 2 sessions left. They are getting longer with less painting. This means I'm thinking about "what" to do to improve the visual. I have kept to my original plan to add less detail but still have the work look realistic. Comments are very much welcome...haven't had too many so far????Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-68354298057211363402011-08-26T09:26:00.000-07:002011-08-26T09:26:03.501-07:00Third Session on this piece!Well, I am pleased with my progress on this painting...didn't meet my end of the week deadline so I am moving it forward till Monday! I have books to do for my accountant, (a job I would put off forever...they were due Aug. 1st.)

This painting I have been trying not to paint every detail I am working on well thought out placement of value and colour rather than every branch. I really admire the work of American artist "Clyde Aspevig" he is a master at painting realism without painting ALL the details. Check His work out at www.clydeaspevig.com You won't be disappointed! (that's if you like realism).Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-91633615200617559582011-08-25T08:32:00.000-07:002011-08-25T08:32:29.802-07:00Second Session of painting!

Well this is the second pass on this painting, and I must say I do like it so far! (Unusual for me) I am trying to achieve a realistic painting with out using great amounts of detail. I feel I lose a lot of "feeling" in my work by over working the piece. (commonly called "over kill") I should leave details to my drawings and commercial work! So, here it is....any comments are more than welcome, even negative!Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-52188929366583879172011-08-21T14:17:00.000-07:002011-08-21T14:17:12.520-07:00The Beginning.....again!

Well, here is the first pass on top of an older painting that never made it! It is the "block-in" stage. I am establishing the composition, darks and basic colours. From this point I will develop the whole piece and hopefully finish it within 1 week! I am teaching on Wed. and I have to put together the fall classes' supply lists. I can't believe summer is just about to come to an end...I wait all year for 3 months. Maybe a home in the south? Dreamin' never hurt anyone did it?
It was a nice break from things that have been going on here. The cottage was nice but we were disappointed that the water wasn't suitable for swimming. The photos showed it was on a river opening up to Little Bald Lake. However, it was quite swampy and full of weeds. And our other dog, Dan, got a severe skin infection and had to be brought in to the vets. This wasn't from the water but his immune system was low due to the depression He is having from the loss of Toby. I had to teach on Wed. so we returned home on Tuesday evening and then went back to the cottage on Friday. Needless to say the "vacation" wasn't what we had planned but a needed rest all the same. I have posted 2 photos from the spot. It was good for painting purposes and I started a small "sketch" which will work itself into a larger painting. I did several pencil drawings and they help to keep the "observation" skills honed!
I will be attending a "Meet The Artist" event at Gallery on The lake in Buckhorn this weekend and will have a couple of new paintings to show. (sorry if this is repeat information; I need to keep advertising!)
Hope to see everyone there!Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5943678940522392651.post-54832282825869289472011-07-26T05:17:00.000-07:002011-07-26T05:17:00.723-07:00

When summer mornings look like this I feel so happy to be an artist! It is about 6:30 AM and I was out driving around my Mother's area looking for inspiration...found some! Mosquitoes and deer flies were out in full force and painting on location (for me) was not an option. These biting pests ruin everything!!!
I made some quick notes and a small sketch. I needed the break this past weekend. I am finding the loss of Toby to be quite overwhelming. He followed me continuously and always had to be touching me. A big paw on my foot, a nose on my lap etc. We still have Dan, but he is a real loner and we have to coax him up to meet us when we come home!
Well, on the work front...I managed to get 2 teaching jobs for the start of September. Now I have 3 classes. I can hardly wait! It has made me realize that I need to figure out the why of things. I tend to just jump in to my work and to teach something, you must have a logical and correct way to proceed in order to explain things to students. I have a pen & ink class and a beginners watercolour class at the Seniors Centre in Newmarket. I also have my watercolour class in Toronto which starts at the end of September.
So, I am back to the easel and will post the finished paintings soon!Barbara McGueyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07197541313783212675noreply@blogger.com0
